Validation, at last. I was overjoyed to hold that John Philips Sousa award. I mean look at that beaming smile! After hundreds of hours mastering paradiddles and flam taps, you drummers know what I’m talking about, I could finally call myself a real drummer. I was also the one of the few girl in the Anaheim School District who marched with a snare strapped to her back and the only girl who toted her big Tama drumset around in the Jazz Band circuit. I even competed on the same stage as John Stamos when he attended John F Kennedy High School.
I still have that little award displayed proudly in my home. I see it as more than a mark of commitment and excellence…
To me it’s a symbol of my rite of passage in becoming an artist.
